Hello and welcome to the very first blog from The Shepherd’s Inn.

We’re Rasmus and Azareth, and if you’ve visited the pub recently, there’s a good chance you’ve seen one of us behind the bar, serving food, running an event, pulling a pint or simply stopping for a chat.

When we took on The Shepherd’s Inn, we knew we weren’t just taking on a business. We were becoming custodians of a village pub that has been at the heart of Melmerby for generations. Since then, we’ve been working hard to create a place that feels welcoming, relaxed and full of life – somewhere locals are proud to call their pub and visitors are delighted to discover.

As part of our new website, we wanted to create this blog as a way of sharing more about what’s happening here. Social media is brilliant for quick updates, but this gives us the opportunity to tell the stories behind the pub and keep everyone up to date with what we’re working on.

What This Blog Will Be About

Quite simply, this blog will be about life at the pub.

We’ll share news, upcoming events, live music nights, menu updates, community activities and the occasional behind-the-scenes glimpse into what goes on when the doors close at the end of the night.

Running a pub is never dull. No two days are ever the same, and that’s one of the things we love most about it. One evening we might have a packed pub watching a big sporting event, the next we’re hosting a local musician, and the day after we’re planning our next community gathering.

This is where we’ll bring all of that together.

A Proper Village Pub

One thing we’ve become increasingly passionate about is the role village pubs play in their communities.

In a world where so much happens online, pubs remain one of the few places where people still come together face-to-face. They are where friendships are formed, celebrations happen, visitors are welcomed and communities stay connected.

We believe village pubs matter.

That’s why we’re committed to keeping The Shepherd’s Inn a genuine village pub. Somewhere you can pop in for a quick pint, enjoy a family meal, bring the dog after a walk, watch live sport with friends or spend an evening listening to local music.

There’s no grand strategy behind that. We simply want to create the sort of pub we’d want to visit ourselves.

Food at the Heart of What We Do

Food has become a huge part of what we do and we’re constantly looking at ways to improve what we offer.

We love honest, satisfying food that’s made with care and served in a relaxed environment. Whether it’s a traditional Sunday lunch, a comforting pub favourite or one of our seasonal specials, we want people to leave feeling they’ve had a great meal and great value.

Through this blog we’ll share menu updates, seasonal dishes, new ideas we’re working on and some of the local produce that finds its way onto our plates.

If you’re looking for somewhere to eat in Melmerby, the Eden Valley or near Penrith, we hope The Shepherd’s Inn becomes a regular stop.

Live Music, Events and Bringing People Together

One of the most enjoyable parts of running the pub has been seeing people come together.

Over the past year we’ve hosted live music, quiz nights, games evenings, sporting events and seasonal celebrations, and we’re always looking for new reasons for people to gather.

Supporting local musicians is something we’re particularly passionate about. Cumbria is full of talented performers and we love giving them a stage while creating a great atmosphere for our customers.

We’ll use this blog to announce what’s coming up, introduce some of the artists who play here and share highlights from nights that remind us exactly why we love running a pub.

Proud to Be Part of Melmerby

Although visitors are always welcome, The Shepherd’s Inn belongs first and foremost to its community.

We’ve been incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received from local residents since taking over. The encouragement, advice, patience and kindness shown to us has made a huge difference.

Melmerby is a special place. Set at the foot of the Pennines and surrounded by beautiful countryside, it’s one of those villages that people often discover by accident and then find themselves returning to time and again.

Through this blog we’ll celebrate not only the pub but also the village and wider Eden Valley area that we’re proud to be part of.

Looking Ahead

Like any independent business, we’re always evolving.

We have new events planned, new ideas we’d like to try and plenty of ambitions for the future. Some will work brilliantly, some might need a little tweaking, but that’s all part of the adventure.

This blog will be a place where we can share that journey honestly.

Most importantly, we want it to be useful. Whether you’re looking for upcoming events, somewhere to eat, live music in Cumbria or simply an excuse to visit the pub, we hope you’ll find something here that encourages you to stop by.
