The Shepherd’s Inn is located in the village of Melmerby, near Penrith, in Cumbria’s Eden Valley. We’re set beneath Hartside Pass and Cross Fell, with easy access from the surrounding villages, countryside routes and main roads.
Melmerby sits on the A686, between Penrith and Alston, at the foot of Hartside Pass. From Penrith, follow the A686 east through the Eden Valley towards Langwathby and Melmerby. The route is scenic and straightforward, with easy access from the M6 at Junction 40 via Penrith.
If you are travelling from Alston, the North Pennines or the North East, follow the A686 west over Hartside Pass towards Melmerby and Penrith.
There is parking available outside The Shepherd’s Inn and around the village green. Please park considerately and avoid blocking access for local residents.
The nearest main railway station is Penrith North Lakes, with regular services on the West Coast Main Line. From Penrith, visitors can continue to Melmerby by taxi. The journey is approximately 9 miles and usually takes around 15 minutes. We recommend booking taxis in advance, especially in the evening.
If you are travelling for a meal, an event or a stop during a walk or cycle ride, we recommend checking your route before setting off, especially during poor weather or winter conditions around Hartside Pass and the higher roads.
